Dark0de Review and Tutorial

Dark0de is a darknet market and cryptocurrency exchange hosted on Tor. It takes its name from the notorious cybercrime forum shut down during Operation Shrouded Horizon in 2015.

How to Access Dark0de

Like all of the other markets we’ve reviewed previously, Dark0de also exists on the Tor network. Therefore, you’ll need the Tor Browser to access it. The Tor Browser can be downloaded at https://www.torproject.org/, but we have a more in-depth tutorial at How to Access Tor (.Onion) Sites if you need assistance.

Things You Will Need

In addition to the Tor Browser, you will also need:

  • Bitcoin or Monero - these are the cryptocurrencies that are accepted as payment on Dark0de
  • PGP - PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is an encryption and decryption program. It is required on Dark0de for things like 2FA and multisig transactions. We have a more detailed tutorial on PGP as well: How to Use PGP for Encryption

Though a number of tutorials insist that you need a VPN as well, you don’t. Tor by itself is enough, and in fact, a VPN can even be a detriment if not used properly. For more information, see How Safe are VPNs? We will have future reviews of some VPN providers if this interests you, however.

Creating an Account

The account creation process, as on most other darknet markets, is also relatively simple. It requires both a public and private username, however, for security purposes; these should consist of two different names.

In addition to a password, it also requires a pincode, which you’ll need if you want to deposit and withdraw funds. When you finish filling out the information, you must also complete a CAPTCHA. Afterwards, hit the Create your Account button. Initially, when doing this, a “500 Internal Server Error” message appeared, but even so, the account still registered.

Interface and Functions

The present-day Dark0de’s interface looks very similar to the original site that law enforcement seized. At the top is an account menu, consisting of your account balance, support, and language choice (English or Russian). Beneath this is a search feature, as well as a link to your messages.

Below are links to the cryptocurrency mixer and exchange, as well as the listings that are for sale. By default, the top (bestselling) products are listed, but if you click on specific categories or do a search, different items will be displayed. Dark0de has a number of important security functions as well. If you are inactive on the site for a long time, you will have to complete a CAPTCHA again to log back in.

On the CAPTCHA, as above, you’ll see two words on a background, and you’ll have to match them with the corresponding symbols below. While it may seem like an annoyance, it helps to prevent unauthorized users from compromising your account.

Also, if you want to access your private messages, you’ll be prompted to re-enter your password (to prevent others from viewing them):

Once you enter the password, your message inbox will appear as normal. Features like this are common on a lot of markets, due to the fact that many get attacked by law enforcement or rivals. Overall, Dark0de seems very easy to use and navigate. Its menus and search functions are in a handy place, and nothing seems overly complex.

Categories and Listings

Dark0de has a large variety of categories and listings, but at the time of this writing, many of them are empty, with the exception of Drugs and several other categories.

Also, at the time of this writing, three categories are listed as “Popular”: Drugs, Database, and Digital.

Dark0de features a bitcoin mixer which, at the time of this writing, is inactive. The idea behind it, as with other mixers, is to disguise the source and destination of coins used in transactions. It may be online in the future.

Dark0de also offers an exchange, in which you can trade BTC for Monero and vice versa. You just type in the amount that you want to exchange, and Dark0de will shift it for you. It should be noted that in order to do this, there is a fee of 0.5%.

Search Functions and Filters

The search function on Dark0de is relatively simple, but this makes it easy to use as well. Type in a search term, such as “MXE,” “2c-b,” or “MDMA,” and you’ll see results related to it.

If you search for an item that isn’t being sold, however, you’ll receive the message “No products found for the search term: [term].” One disadvantage of the search function here, as opposed to other markets, is that there are no search filters as of yet. Be that as it may, you can narrow down your selection of products by country (where they are shipped from). The only choices available at present are the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Turkey, France, Australia, and Brazil.

How to Choose a Vendor

As on other markets, choosing a vendor can be tricky if you haven’t used the market before. Even so, there are several ways to narrow the process down.

Vendors’ profiles indicate other markets on which they’re currently active or have been in the past. This can be a good indicator of whether or not they’re high quality. Also, some vendors have badges such as “silver,” “gold” or “diamond” based on the number of successful sales they’ve completed, which also tends to indicate quality (the lowest rank is “basic”).

Plus, customers can write reviews of the vendors and their products, and if a vendor has many positive reviews, this is a decent indication that their products are high quality. Nonetheless, vendor feedback is sometimes faked by individuals who are paid to give positive reviews, so keep an eye out for things of this nature.

If you’re still unsure about a vendor even with the reviews and awards, you can ask on a forum like Dread to get further feedback. Once you find some vendors that you like, you can stick with them, of course. If in the instance you do get scammed by a vendor, Dark0de also has the option of reporting them to moderation.

How to Add Funds

Like the other functions on the site, adding funds is simple as long as you follow the instructions. Dark0de lists a wallet address for you to deposit your coins into, so first you must add them to this address from whichever outside wallet you use (like Electrum).

Once you’ve deposited coins into the site’s wallet, you can then use them to buy products. In addition to bitcoin, you can also deposit Monero; however, at present, you can’t spend Monero and will have to exchange it for bitcoin.

How to Buy Products

The process of buying products on Dark0de is also quite similar to other major markets. You can use the search function, browse through the categories and vendors to find an item you want, or you can find them on the vendors’ profiles.

In addition to the price, listings usually have a preview image (as above), and also list the payment type (escrow or finalize early (FE)).  Once you find the item in question, click the yellow button that says “Order.”

Once you click the Order button, you’ll be taken to a separate page where you can read more details about the product and finalize your order. On this page, you can also select the amount you want and add it to your watchlist, add it to your cart, or complete your order.

On the same page, you can also contact the seller or view the rest of her products. If you click the order button, and there aren’t enough coins in your wallet, you’ll be taken back to the Wallets page and will need to deposit more coins.

Once you finish the order, you can track its progress from the “Your Orders” page, which is found on the dropdown menu underneath your user profile.

You can contact Dark0de’s support team two ways: click on the “My Support” link at the top of the page, or scroll down to the “Support” menu at the bottom of the page.

Once there, click on the “Create” button, and you can fill out the support form. This process is very similar to filling out an IT support ticket on other sites; select a subject from the dropdown menu such as “Payment” or “Order and Dispute.” Afterward, fill out the form and be as detailed as you can about your issue. Before sending the ticket, you must once again fill out a CAPTCHA. Also on this page is a link to the FAQ, so check there first to see if your question hasn’t been answered yet.

On the “Your Tickets” page, you can also track the progress of your support tickets and see if they’ve been resolved yet.

Pros and Cons

  • Offers a large variety of products, and will probably offer more as the market grows larger.
  • Works with both BTC and Monero (but payments can only be made in BTC).
  • Excellent security practices like 2FA, multiple CAPTCHAs, etc.

  • Site went offline frequently (likely due to DDoS attacks)
  • When switching to different sections of the site, it often gave “500 internal server” errors and other errors.
